Viburnum Burkwood (Viburnum × burkwoodii)
Description:
Viburnum Burkwood (Viburnum × burkwoodii), also known as Burkwood Viburnum, is a standout deciduous shrub prized for its intensely fragrant, ball-shaped clusters of pinkish-white flowers that bloom in early to mid-spring. The blooms emerge from attractive pink buds and fill the garden with a spicy-sweet aroma, making this shrub a must-have near patios, walkways, or entryways where the fragrance can be enjoyed. After flowering, the plant develops pendulous clusters of red berries that ripen to black in summer, providing food for birds and adding seasonal interest. Its glossy, dark green foliage turns deep maroon or purple in fall, and in warmer climates (zones 7–8), the leaves may remain evergreen.
Burkwood Viburnum has an upright, multi-stemmed habit and matures at 8–10 feet tall and 5–7 feet wide, making it ideal as a specimen, hedge, screen, or in mixed borders. Exceptionally easy to grow and low maintenance, it is tolerant of a wide range of soils, urban pollution, and is deer resistant. This hybrid is also drought and heat tolerant once established.
